Word is the Word

Matthew 5.33-37

Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No. No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.

Matthew 5.37 (ESV)

Introduction

Do you remember the game show, “To Tell the Truth?”

A recent survey indicated that 64% of all Americans would lie when circumstances suited, and they believed that no one would be injured by the truth.

Culture’s new view of lying is that lying is normal.

Why do people (We) Lie?

We Lie in order to elevate ourselves.

We lie to protect ourselves.

We lie to damage another person out of hatred, anger, or revenge.

We lie for greed.

How do people (we) lie?

  • We lie through slander.
  • We lie through gossip and rumor.
  • We lie through deception.
  • We lie through exaggeration.
  • We lie when we misrepresent what another person said.
  • We lie when we intentionally create false impressions.
  • We lie when we refuse to correct untrue statements.
  • We lie through flattery.
  • We can even lie in our silence.

Jesus commands us to make two characteristics a part of our life and speech.

  • Simplicity

  • Integrity

We are to reflect the character of God in our speech…the TRUTH.
