John 20.19-23
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
John 20.21-22 (ESV)
Introduction
Jesus gives his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- Jesus “BREATHES” the Holy Spirit into the Disciples.
- The Holy Spirit is the “BREATH OF GOD” in scripture!
- The Hebrew word for Spirit is ruach
- The Greek word for Spirit is pneuma
- The gift of the Holy Spirit is the life of God in Christ given to us and filling a disciple’s heart and mind.
The Holy Spirit is God’s Promise to all Followers, but the Holy Spirit Comes with a PURPOSE.
- The Holy Spirit comes to purify and cleanse (Acts 2.3, Isaiah 6.6-7)
- “As the Father has sent me, so I send you!” (John 20.22)
- The Holy Spirit comes to gift disciples to accomplish God’s mission (1 Corinthians 12.3b-13, Romans 12.4-8)
- The Holy Spirit comes to unify disciples into the Body of Christ (Romans 12.4-5, 1 Corinthians 12.12)
- The Holy Spirit comes to empower disciples to be witnesses (Acts 2.4, 6; John 20.21.b, Acts 1.8, Matthew 28. 20)
God’s promise and Purpose for giving Disciples the Holy Spirit has not changed!
The two questions we must answer.
-
Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit?
- What are you doing with the gifts God has given you?.
