The Stump of Peace
Isaiah 11.1-10
The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them.
Isaiah 11.6 (ESV)
Introduction
Advent envisions a new future, created by God’s chosen one.
That new future is characterized by peace.
The peace Isaiah envisions is the shalom of God.
People participate in God’s coming peace.
Creation participates in God’s coming peace.
Animals participate in God’s coming peace.
Isaiah’s vision is brought to pass by God’s chosen, Spirit-filled leader.
A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
God’s peace comes from an unexpected source.
God’s coming peace has an already and not yet component.
