The Holy Pause

Psalm 116

Cease striving and know that I am God…The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Psalm 46.10a, 11 (NASB)

Introduction

Have you ever been in trouble? I mean REAL trouble?

If life gives you lemons…make lemonade!

Trouble has a way of unsettling our faith and unseating our hope.

In Psalm 46, David is reflecting on God’s protection in times of trouble.

God provides refuge in the context of nature. (vv. 1-4)

God provides refuge in the context of the nations. (vv. 5-8)

God provides refuge in terms of the powers and nations of this earth. (vv. 8-9)

David’s refrain in this Psalm provides God’s followers with hope.

The LORD of Hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. (Psalm 46.7, 11 NASB)

Psalm 46 teaches us HOW to respond to trouble and to live in faith.

  • Observe the handiwork of God (v,8)
  • Cease striving – in a word STOP! (v. 10)
  • Know that God is God! (v. 10)This is a radical call to trust, and rest.

David’s Song is a radical call to worship, trust, and rest in God’s care.

Why are we overcome with fear and anxiety during times of trouble?

  • We live in a frenetic pace of life – seeking answers, NOW to all our problems.
  • We don’t really KNOW God…or place our TRUST in God.
  • We don’t stop to worship and observe God’s work.

Conclusion

What do you need to do to become still?

How do you need to know God more fully today?
