Living Life in Babylon

Jeremiah 29.1, 4-7
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
Psalm 31.14-1Jeremiah 29.7 (ESV)

Introduction

Jeremiah is preaching to exiles, in Babylon.

Jeremiah’s word to the exiles is an unexpected word.

Jeremiah’s word is a hard word to people who have lost a great deal.

Jeremiah’s word challenges the Israelite exiles to live life in Babylon.

God’s call is for the Israelites to seek the good of the city.

The exiles are to pray for and to be a blessing to the Babylonians.

We are living in exile today.

We find ourselves here by the permissive will of God.

There is no quick and easy fix.

We are called to create a community of faith in a strange and foreign land.

We are called to seek the welfare of the city.
