A New Kind of King

Matthew 21.1-11

When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, Who is this?

Matthew 21.10 (NRSV)

Introduction

We are certainly living in a time of tumult.

Matthew reports the account of Jesus entering into Jerusalem, when the whole world is up in the air.

Say to Daughter Zion,
See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

By entering Jerusalem in this way, at this time, Jesus is CLEARLY making a statement.

Jesus is announcing his identity as the Messiah of God.

  • He rode on a donkeya symbol of HUMILITY.

  • Jesus was accompanied by a ragtag froup of followersthe Kingdom is for ALL.

  • Jesus entered Jerusalem to DIE to give his life for Gods SALVATION.

Jesus Triumphal entry reminds us that his Kingdom does not reflect the values of this world.

Eugene Peterson reminds us that this Kingdom is subversive to the culture of power, of dominance, of prestige. Jesus comes bringing a Kingdom of healing, of humility, of servanthood, of gentleness, of peace ableness, self-giving acts of generosity are the marks of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

The Kingdom of God, ushered in on the back of a donkey brings salvation hope and submission to the Lordship of a suffering savior.
